Handroll Set from ROL Hand Roll Bar in Irvine
My girlfriends and I were trying to organize a dinner for the longest time, finally we said okay - let’s go get sushi or something, where? and ROL Hand Roll Bar (by Kei Concepts) in Irvine was recommended. We arrived on a Friday evening around 6:30PM, and one friend had already put in our name for the waitlist, and due to the day/time and popularity we probably had about a 30-40 minute wait. To kill some time, we popped over to the Daiso a few doors down to shop. The overall restaurant space is tiny, lending to the longer wait times - it’s bar seating of about less than 30 seats? But that means you will get a very cool chef-to-table experience.
After perusing the menu, we thought it to be a best value if we each ordered a set. I ordered the 6-set that is $33 and includes the following hand rolls: salmon, spicy tuna crunch, scallop, yellowtail, blue crab and toro. My two friends each ordered the 7-set which has the same as the 6-set, but also includes an Unagi hand roll (which I ended up eating one of them since they aren’t into eel - they just didn’t realize that eel was on the set menu when they ordered). The sets are a good value, for mine in particular, if I would have ordered each hand roll individually it would have amounted to $35.75, compared to the $33 for the set. I was extremely hungry and the 6 hand rolls was the perfect amount for me. However, if you have particular preferences, etc the set might not work for you and in that case, just order the hand rolls that you know you would like. There were also premium rand rolls available, I saw one being topped with caviar that looked so tasty. Every hand roll is made to order and recommended to be eaten within 10-15 seconds of being served to ensure the nori is still crispy and the rice is warm. I really enjoyed the chef-to-table experience, and intimate ambiance. There are some great specials as well like a lunch hand roll set for $15 available Monday - Friday until 4PM only (excluding holidays), the set includes 4 hand rolls (salmon, spicy tuna, scallop and blue crab) along with a miso soup and edamame - that seems like a steal to me!
