Virgin Atlantic Mile High Tea from LHR to LAX
This is what I look forward to on our return Virgin Atlantic flights from LHR to LAX as we typically do the “daytime” flight which includes the mile high tea as the 2nd meal. *sandwich offering vary depending on any seasonal menu changes (also the food offerings are, and presented differently dependent on your seat class).
And yes there is a difference between an afternoon tea and a high tea. The former is served typically around 4pm or afternoon and consists of petite finger foods (tea sandwiches, scones & pastries/cakes/desserts) with origins in aristocracy/upper class (see below story) & taken whilst sitting on low seating/tables. Today, afternoon tea has evolved into an indulgent ritual and way to come together to celebrate special occasions or spend time with loved ones. The latter is a working class meal, usually served during supper/dinner time as it involves using cutlery to eat a more substantial meal (fish, meat, breads) and on high tables with high back chairs. “While many people in Britain today refer to this meal as ‘supper’ or ‘dinner’, in many homes, it’s still referred to as ‘tea’. And the word ‘high’ has been (rather confusingly) dropped from the phrase all together.” (Patisserie Valerie/Brigit’s Bakery/Destination Tea)
From the Virgin Atlantic afternoon tea box - Did you know? Afternoon tea came about thanks to a hungry Duchess. in the 1840s. Anna Russell, seventh Duchess of Bedford, couldn’t bear the long wait between luncheon and dinner. So she ordered Some tea and bread, then made it a daily routine and invited friends to make it a social occasion. We wonder if the Duchess ever dreamed that nearly 200 years later, afternoon tea would be served above the clouds?
