Traveling from London Heathrow to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport - Getting Amsterdam Travel Ticket

My mind is still blown for how short our flight was from London Heathrow to Amsterdam Schiphol - it usually estimated for 1 Hour 15-20 MInutes, we flew British Airways and got there from take off to landing in 45 minutes, INSANE! That’s basically like Scott and I flying from Orange County to Las Vegas (the record timing for us as been 32 minutes - they really turned on those jets to make up time when they are a little behind from the previous destination coming into SNA lol). Because we didn’t want to take two pieces of large luggage with us from London to Amsterdam, that we’d also have to check for an additional fee, we stored at LHR’s Left Luggage. This was nice because we wouldn’t be drained from traveling, we’d be able to land, get passes or tickets for public transit, check into our hotel and head to our boat canal cruise.

When we arrived, we headed to the ground transportation area as there was access to ticketing and escalators down to the train platform to get into the City Centre. It can be a bit overwhelming when you first arrive to the ground transportation area as it’s so open, lots of signs then people go every which way (but not as chaotic as moving through Tokyo Station I’ll tell you that!). I immediately noticed a help kiosk manned by a person, so I explained how long we’d be visiting and asked what type of transit tickets were available, and she explained to us that there are 1, 2, & 3 Day Amsterdam Travel Tickets available that allow unlimited travel across Amsterdam, then let us know where we could purchase tickets.

There are automated stations, but you can also queue up to buy from an attendant. We confirmed when our passes would be valid for the entirety of our stay and for the last day when we need to return to the airport. So we purchased the 3-Day Amsterdam Travel Ticket, and although with the amount of walking we did over taking the trams & trains, we probably could have saved money buy by ticket - but we just didn’t want to have to keep buying individual fares, so basically we are paying for convenience. With the Amsterdam 1, 2 or 3 Days Travel Ticket, the benefits include:

  • Unlimited travel across Amsterdam with just one ticket

  • Access to train, bus 397 and Niteliner makes for carefree travel between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam

  • Valid on all buses, trams, metros and ferries run by GVB

1-day (€ 18), 2-day (€ 24) and 3-day (€ 30) tickets are available, and can be purchased from NS counters, participating other carriers (EBS, Connexxion and GVB) and via third parties.
