Christmas Tablescape with Mostly Pre-Owned Items and Decor
Merry Christmas if you celebrate, and happy holidays to all! I really feel like Christmas crept up on me this year. I mean I was hearing the jingles and songs, seeing the trees and decor, but just wasn’t really registering. For this year, I wanted to host my family on Christmas eve (since we go over to my in laws on Christmas day) so we could make dinner for them. Scott and I made a Shepard’s pie, baked salmon and side of roasted veggies. We incorporated some of his traditions like the Christmas cracker, which was fun for my family to do with each other. I knew I wanted a festive, but not over the top tablescape, and I didn’t want to spend money on anything too themed.
The only big purchase was the foldable 6ft table because we no longer have a dining table. The folding aspect make it easier for us to be able to move around and transport from garage to upstairs and vice versa. I have a white tablecloth that I could use, but had leftover disposable tablecloths that came in handy. For the tablescape here’s what I used from what I already had - it’s really seamless for me to be able to style what I already have since it’s mainly neutral colors. Anything that you may already have that is neutral or Christmas/holiday colors can work for this time of year:
Cheesecloth Table Runner from an event I styled
Candles and tea lights in repurposed candle containers
Flowers rearranged into vases from a flower arrangement from a party I previously attended
Christmas plates and napkins from a couple Christmases ago (yes I held onto them)
Gold accented stemless champagne flutes
Items I purchased for the holiday season in general, but incorporated into the table runner styling:
Christmas Crackers
I actually had accumulated the wooden tress from the “dollar section”/bullseye playground in Target (I spent about $10 on 3 trees), and had also gotten two ceramic trees from Target during a promotional period (I spent about $11 on 2 trees). When there’s a holiday or I’m looking for something seasonal, I’ll typically pop into the “dollar section” because there’s always really cute and on trend, reasonable priced items, and a handful of items that are evergreen. So yes there’s Christmas items, but they’ll be neutral colored so I can always use them again and again. Instead for example buying kitschy Christmas/holiday decor that is too themed/locked into a color scheme that you can’t use every year unless you do the same color story or theme. We also LOVE to incorporate Christmas crackers into our festivities, so we always get ours from TJ Maxx since they’ll have a variety of crackers. We ended out Christmas dinner with a Yule Log, which I always ask my mom to bring. They are my absolute fave (especially the ones that taste like mocha/coffee), I just love how they’re decorated!
