Pet Paw Salt Dough Ornaments DIY
Christmas weekend trial and error with this paw print salt dough ornament activity, but it worked out! I have been wanting to capture an imprint of Lucky’s paw, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to. I also did not want to buy new supplies to create this ornament. So I only used what I had on hand.
The recipe I originally followed yielded way more ornaments than I needed, approx. 18 of these round ornaments at ~1/8in thickness. I also baked at too high of heat and rolled out in different directions which created air pockets in the dough. So I had to re-do Lucky’s paw ornament. Here’s what you need and can increase the amounts if you want more ornaments since the dough is easy to make!
WHAT YOU NEED
DOUGH + BAKING 🧑🏻🍳
•1 cup all-purpose flour (no self-rising)
•½ cup table salt
•½ cup warm water (more as needed)
•bowl + mixing spoon
•parchment paper
•baking/cookie sheet
•drinking straw
•rolling pin
•cookie cutters or round edge
•optional- food coloring
DECORATING 👩🏻🎨
•twine or ribbon
•paint brush
•acrylic paint(s)
•optional: glitter, rubber stamps or non-toxic varnish to seal
1. Pre-heat oven to 225F (if you’re worried about air pockets or bake time because of the imprint in the dough, try a lower temp 170-190F and bake/cure longer), mix flour + salt in bowl then stir in warm water. Mix + knead until everything is well combined.
2. Roll out the dough to 1/8in thickness on lightly floured parchment paper with rolling pin
3. Use cookie cutters to cut into dough and peel away excess. Take a straw and punch hole into the ornament.
4. Lay ornament on parchment paper + flat surface. Then hold animal paw and evenly apply pressure across the entire paw into the dough.
5. Bake 2-3 hours, you’ll have to monitor and can flip once.
6. When cooled down, add string, paint/decorate (seal if you’d like), let dry + hang!
