Going Plastic Free with Mesh Produce Bags
Another easy and simple sustainable swap are reusable mesh bags instead of the plastic produce bags provided in grocery stores. I love taking these with me to the supermarket or farmer’s market. It can take some time to form the habit of replacing the mesh bags back in your car after unloading groceries, or remembering to bring them with you before heading to the supermarket; so I have two sets of tote bags that have a set each of 6 mesh bags, 3 different sizes and I make sure to always have 1 set in the car.
I’ve used finer mesh produce bags, and also this cotton mesh style that looks more natural - it’s more of a personal style preference. These have been sturdy for me, and held up the past year. The downside to use this style mesh is it may be a little more difficult for the grocery cashier to tell what type of produce is inside the bag - but most of the time they have to open up the bag (regardless of what type of bag), so they can grab the code off of the produce sticker. It has never really slowed down the checkout process for me. These bags are great for storing other items too like face masks, or anything that you need a bag for. Shop reusable mesh bags here.
