South Coast Plaza Celebrates 50 Years of Luxury Shopping
Today, March 15th, marks premier luxury destination South Coast Plaza's 50th Anniversary. What once were fields of lima bean crop was developed and transformed by the Segerstrom family into the shopping center you see and shop at today.
South Coast Plaza opened its doors in March 1967 with 70 shops and department stores May Company and Sears; with the Segerstrom family devoting 50 years to curate the highest caliber of shops, restaurants and events (250 boutiques and 30 restaurants).
South Coast Plaza invited members of the media and press for a special dinner at Water Grill to celebrate their 50 year anniversary. The evening was led by the Executive Director of Marketing Debra Gunn Downing and SCP Executive Anton Segerstrom who is also the son of the late shopping center's co-founder Henry Segerstrom. They spoke of the exciting things that the center will offer and participate in to commemorate such a significant event; as well as reminiscenced on South Coast Plaza's beginnings, which we also got to see with black and white photographs on display with select designer goods exclusively available at SCP (Anton is even pictured at the ribbon cutting for SCP).
This milestone will be celebrated for the year with exciting events, exhibits and special collaborations; one of the collaborations that I'm most excited about given my dance background is the world premier of American Ballet Theatre's Whipped Cream with the Pacific Symphony at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Some designers that are collaborating with SCP to unveil exclusive pieces for this momentous occasion include Gucci, Brunello Cucinelli, TOD's and Marni.
This fall, guests have an array of offerings to look forward to with SCP debuting its own collectible retrospective book including never-before-seen photographs which will be published by Assouline.; as well as fashion events and runway shows.
South Coast Plaza is an internationally recognized shopping destination and has a robust history of bringing on many coveted brands such as the first Nordstrom outside of the Pacific Northwest,, the only Weekend Max Mara North American location, the exclusive U.S. location for Les Parfums Louis Vuitton and the first West Coast boutique for The Webster.
