Gyeongbokgung Palace 경복궁 in Seoul, Korea
The Gyeongbokgung Palace ("Palace Greatly Blessed by Heaven" / 경복궁) is a beautiful palace in Seoul, South Korea, referred to as the Northern Palace, which dates all the way back to 1395 as the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty. Although the grounds were destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (Japanese Invasions, 1592-1598) the buildings and surrounding area were restored back to their magnificence during the reign of King Gojong (1852-1919).
I experienced such a big part of Korean culture and absolutely loved the splendor of the palace's buildings, vast gardens and sprawling grounds. If it wasn't as hot, Jen and I could have spent more time outside; but we were exposed to direct sunlight since most of the palace grounds are open courtyards and walkways. My favorite area includes the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, a pavilion that sits on a pond, a place where the king hosted foreign officials and is located west of the
Gangnyeongjeon and Gyotaejeon Halls (the king and queen's living quarters). I wish I would have gotten to visit the Hyangwonjeong Pavilion on Hyangwonji Pond as well, but it's located on the furthest Northern side of the palace grounds and we didn't quite make it over there.
The painted ceilings and awnings, as well as ornate tile work of the various halls and gates were absolutely extravagant; detailed with intricate designs and vibrant colors. It seemed like a changing of the guard ceremony took place every 30 minutes or so, which is a great way to experience Korean tradition. When the guards are standing at their post in front of the Gwanghwamun Gate visitors are able to come up and stand next to a guard to snap a photo. Right after passing through the gate, the ticket windows are to the right.
Admission for adults (ages 19-64) is only 3,000 won (that's a little under $3.00)! Check out the remaining admission prices and information here! Jen and I took the Seoul Metro to get to Gyeongbokgung Palace 경복궁, and the station led right to a palace gate.
