Sustainability with Eco-Friendly Beauty and Bath Products

Following my ways to be sustainable for a waste free life blog post, I wanted to dive in deeper with eco-conscious beauty, body, dental & skincare methods and products. I like that all of these following items are travel friendly (we can be utilized when we are able to travel again) and some products are easily refillable.

MakeUp Eraser $20

I cant even begin to tell you how many makeup up remover toilettes I’m replacing with the use of this one MakeUp Eraser towel. It does effectively remove make up and residue, but I do have to cleanse my face afterwards (which is what I would do after using a towelette). I would say the only downside is making sure not to wet the entire towel because once it is left out to dry post-use, it stinks. So the best way to maximize the towel is to use only one section of it each time you are removing makeup. It’s machine washable and will last me 3-5 years. I typically get use of the towel for a week and then throw in with a load of laundry. I am thinking of getting 1-2 more towels to have on hand. MakeUp Eraser has taken a step further with being sustainable by now offering their makeup remover towels in eco-friendly packaging for their solid colored towels. Which means they have a variety of fun, printed towels as well (makes for a solid gift)!

Bamboo Rounds $12.99

I’ll typically be able to get all of my makeup off in one go with my MakeUp Eraser towel, but in case I have really stubborn eye makeup or further residue that I wanted to remove, I use re-usable bamboo rounds - the sustainable version of disposable cotton rounds. These are so functional because they include the finger pocket instead of just being the double sided round pad, they are super soft, and I don’t feel like a terrible person every time I use them. I feel like it’s such a waste when I end up using 3-4 cotton rounds and discarding. Additionally, I’ll use these to pat toner onto my skin. These rounds in particular are larger (4 inches) than the usual cotton round, and include 12 in a set with a drawstring laundry bag for easy washing and drying.

Shampoo & Conditioner Bars $27.95

I first started getting into shampoo bars through lush. I was drawn to using the shampoo bars because of the compact size and be able to easily store but take with me on my travels. My only gripe with using shampoo bars is that you have to make sure they adequately dry out in between uses. Having the container is very important so that you don’t leave your shampoo bar in your shower where it continually is getting wet when you aren’t using it.

This set by Detox Earth is awesome because you receive 2 shampoo bars, 1 conditioner bar and 2 travel tins. Package Free has a wide variety of shampoo and conditioner bars targeting specific hair problems, and they even offer bundles.

Refillable Deodorant

I heard great things about the refillable deodorant by Humandkind; there are no harmful chemicals, only natural ingredients derived from plants & minerals. It’s 40% better at killing Staphylococcus hominis, the bacteria that causes body odor in all of us, than other leading natural deodorants. And has been tested in an independent certified lab.

While Humankind’s deodorant has antiperspirant qualities, they can't call it one because they never use aluminum or parabens (ingredients required by the fda to be labelled an "antiperspirant"), which have been linked to diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s.

If you’re switching from an antiperspirant, give your body a couple weeks to cleanse out toxins and adjust to our aluminum-free formula. Their refill is a 1.6 oz per Kindfill (refill). The container is guaranteed for life and available in 4 colors off white, grey, charcoal and neon (green yellow) - $1 of each container purchase goes to removing plastic waste from the ocean. The deodorant itself is available in 2 scents (Rosemary-Mint or Coconut) and unscented.

Although the deodorant container itself is made of plastic, you will continue to use it, so it is cutting out single-use plastic. And their refills arrive in almost all biodegradable packaging with the exception of a couple small plastic components needed for the refill to function - they are continually working on reducing waste and improving their packaging.

Bamboo Toothbrush

Being able to find a completely biodegrable toothbrush is difficult due to a toothbrush needing certain kinds of hairs for the bristle portion.
