Dog Heart from Aquamarine アクアマリン Cafe - Shibuya - Tokyo, Japan

It’s official - Scott has been to his first dog cafe; my first was while visiting Seoul, Korea - and this is just added to a list of other animal cafes that we got to experience whilst in Tokyo. We weren’t planning on doing a dog cafe, but this place, Dog Heart, came highly recommended by our friends that had visited a few days prior.

Since it was located in Shibuya, we decided to stop in since we were planning to be in the area for our last day in Japan. If it were not for the handwritten signs at the bottom of the stairs, we may have easily passed the building. There’s also an otter and meerkat cafe in the same building but different floor. Dog Heart isn’t actually a cafe like other dog cafe’s I’ve been to (with a sit down service), this place is purely for spending time with dogs.

It’s a small location, therefore if there are 2 people standing in the entryway/lobby, the staff will have you wait outside. We waited about 10 minutes while the couple ahead of us got situated; when we came in, there were 2 staff members that showed us the pricing sheet , we selected the time period we wanted to spend in there and filled out a form. Afterwards, we swapped out our shoes for croc-like slippers (there’s an area to store shoes, bags and coats), washed our hands and entered the “play pen” area. There were 3-4 other small groups of people already in there, so we waiting a few minutes for doggies to come to us.

It can take awhile for a dog to come up to you and play or sit in your lap - there are signs up with rules that say not to go chasing after a dog or to be seated when holding a dog. Patience is key (especially when there are quite a few people in play area), and there is no seating situation, so you’ll just hang out on the floor. If you want a more personalized experience, you can rent a dog (any breed for 1 hour) to go on a walk at a nearby park for ¥ 3,600.
