Korean BBQ at Star BBQ 별대포 - Byul Daepo in Garden Grove, CA
I don't know why I haven't already shared one of my fave, and I mean my FAVE Korean BBQ spot, Star BBQ - Byul Daepo in Garden Grove. I'm been a veteran of this all-you-can-eat KBBQ restaurant for the past 8 years. I was introduced to this place by a friend and haven't been able to find a better place since - although I've been given a couple more places to try out on the same street so we shall see how Star BBQ fares against those restaurants.
On my trip to Seoul Korea, I to my surprise, didn't have as much KBBQ as I thought I would. I ended up trying lots of soups, noodles and lamb skewers. Back to Star BBQ, it starts at $21.99/person for AYCE - you also have the option to order single portions, but for ~$22, I feel that AYCE is the best worthwhile option. As you might expect the wait can be upwards of 45 minutes+ depending on your party size and the day/time you come to dine here. If I can't get around coming during a busy time, I just hang out at the bar lounge upstairs and grab a drink while I wait.
I've never had an issue with service (they even have it in true Korean style with a bell to press if you need a server to come to your table) even before they did a revamp of the dining area (adding vents above each grill) and updating their menus with a much more modern touch. I do miss the big projector screen that would have KPOP music videos playing and adding to the atmosphere, but they do still have the music playing (I just get so sucked into the visuals because secretly I want to be a KPOP star). There's quite the variety of meats, seafood and offals - upon being seated, you get a variety of side dishes such as a variety of kimchi, some kind of potato or macaroni salad, regular salad, rice paper and bean sprouts. I always order a side of radish paper, pepper - salt- sesame oil and chopped garlic; all refillable upon availability. There are usually some killer beer and plum wine deals like buy 1 bottle, get 1 for 1 cent, really yummy soju drinks and complimentary soft serve.
I’ve been able to make a reservation for parties of 7 or more before, and I”m not sure if that’s changed now but you can give the restaurant a call to see if they can take your reservation. If not, I try to get there right when they open to avoid an outrageous wait. Happy Eating!
