Interview with Jewelry Designer Jenny Dayco
It just so happened that I had captured Jenny Dayco's beaded floral headbands in action on the runway at the Katya Leonovich show during New York Fashion Week. She contacted me to point that fact out, and I was so glad that she did because I got the chance to check out her jewelry, headband, and scarf collections online. I had the honor of meeting Jenny at her showroom in Downtown LA last week to get to know her and get up close action of her jewelry and headbands! Check out her interview below AND a special promo towards a Jenny Dayco purchase :) From now until November 6, 2012, snag your own piece of JENNY DAYCO by receiving 10% off your entire purchase AND FREE SHIPPING! What pushed you to leave your former life of graphic design and talent agent to become a jewelry designer?
I was a decent graphic designer. I'm one of those people that if I turn in something, I'm never fully satisfied with my designs; I feel like I could keep changing it. With jewelry, there's a definite start and end; there's no revising or no open ended confusion, I just need limitations!
How did you start making hair accessories?
One of my Japanese sales reps was in the showroom, and couldn't use jewelry to style with their clothing, so asked if I could make headbands and I said YES! I wanted to explore what the 'Jenny Dayco' version of the headband was. I started scouting around for what I thought would be cool as a headband.I'm always attracted to big and sparkly things, it's apart of my aesthetic.
What's your FAVE piece from the Fall 2012 collection?
(shown below), I love the whole art deco, geometric, and black& gold look to it. I thought, let's see if I can do this cuff; since I had the extra beads laying around.
Are there certain materials you usually use in creating your designs?
I found that certain materials such as gold and silver, customers like to see from me. I just started getting more of a response towards antique gold and brass pieces.
What's your fave Spring 2013 piece?
The necklace (shown bottom right) resembling a Greek-like wreath. The triangular beads are a big statement, and make a big impact--to sum it up BIG & Blingy!
Describe your most recent accomplishments
-The Mosley Tribe beaded Sunglasses; it was an exciting project, and something that I had never done before--it got ALOT of Press.
-My first order for Nordstrom
-My first time showing at New York Fashion Week (Katya Leonovich Show)
What have you been working on lately?
Trying to focus on other stuff--jewelry and my clients. My biggest collaboration with Odylyne and a 'Holiday' collaboration with Lok'd jewelry (designer Jase Calderon uses legos in his creations)
